Traditional Ethnobotanical Information

Thousands of years of close association with humans have given rise to many distinctive cultivars of Achiote leaf and pod. Sometimes called Annatto or Bixa, the seed pods are used as a natural colorant in modern food products. For best therapeutic values, our extraction process uses the green whole leaf, kindly harvested by indigenous medicine women.

Achiote is a full spectrum botanical tea that can be extracted in heated water. Add one teaspoon of dried herb to 16 ounces of boiling water. Stir in herbs then remove from heat. Allow to steep until fully colored and flavored with the essence of the herb (at least 5 minutes). Strain, sweeten or flavor if desired. Serve warm or allow to cool and store in the refrigerator. Typically 1 to 4 cups of Achiote tea are taken daily.
